Well 4 years doesn't sound very long but the newspapers rarely report these cases properly.

If you read the facts (the newspaper chooses to tell you) you can see what causes the poor guy's neck to break is a fall whilst in the hold.

That really isn't the same as an intention to cause GBH or break the guy's neck. It was "reckless" and therefore partly an accident.

And - do we know whether the bouncer had a right to chuck this guy out of the club - or did he just attack him for no reason?

Hey Guys, see this link and movie of actual incident where a student is put in a full nelson and his neck is broken. The guy who did it is in jail for what he did and the poor guy who had his neck broken will never be the same again.
